A-G Requirements
The “a–g” requirements are designed to help high school students build the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in college, especially during their first year at a University of California/California State University campus. These courses aren’t meant to prepare students for just one specific major. Instead, they give students a strong, well-rounded academic foundation that keeps their options open.
By completing the “a–g” requirements, students gain experience in a variety of subjects that help them grow as thinkers, learners, and problem-solvers. UC/CSU faculty recognize this coursework as valuable preparation for college because it supports both academic confidence and readiness.
For families, this means that students who complete the “a–g” pattern are not only meeting UC/CSU admission expectations, but are also developing important skills like critical thinking, organization, and effective study habits, skills that will support their success in college and beyond.
